Voice Transcriber — Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 9, 2026
Overview
Voice Transcriber is a browser extension that records audio from your microphone and sends it to the Groq API for speech-to-text transcription. We are committed to protecting your privacy.
Data We Collect
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal data.
- Audio recordings — captured temporarily in browser memory during recording. Audio is sent directly to the Groq API for transcription and is never stored on disk or on any server we control.
- Transcribed text — displayed in the extension UI and copied to your clipboard. Not stored persistently beyond the current session.
- API key — stored locally in your browser's extension storage (chrome.storage.local). Never transmitted to any server other than api.groq.com.
- Extension settings — stored locally in chrome.storage.local. Never transmitted externally.
Third-Party Services
- Groq API (api.groq.com) — receives your audio recordings for transcription and optionally receives transcribed text for grammar correction. Groq's privacy policy applies to data processed by their service. Visit groq.com/privacy-policy.
- Sentry (sentry.io) — receives anonymous error reports when the extension encounters bugs. Error reports include: error message, stack trace, browser version, and extension version. No audio, transcriptions, or personal data is included in error reports.
Permissions
- Microphone — required to record audio for transcription.
- Notifications — used to show transcription results.
- Offscreen — required for background audio recording when using keyboard shortcuts.
- Storage — used to save your settings locally.
- Tabs — used to open the recorder page and manage extension UI.
- Content Scripts (all URLs) — required for the push-to-talk keyboard shortcut and recording overlay indicator to work on any webpage.
Data Retention
Audio is held in memory only during recording and is discarded immediately after transcription. No audio is ever written to disk. Transcription results are held in memory for the current session only.
Your Control
- You can revoke microphone access at any time through browser settings.
- You can disable or uninstall the extension at any time.
- All locally stored settings are removed when the extension is uninstalled.
